Nature reserve with game viewing, fishing, hiking, picnic spots & more


Rietvlei Dam offers a number of sporting facilities. The angling area includes toilet and braai facilities as well as camping and chalets for overnight guests. No canoes or baitboats are allowed. Fish caught in Rietvlei dam include catfish, yellowfish, carp and Tilapia.

Game Viewing


40km of roads within the reserve make for a pleasant outing with the family. Game is readily seen along the roads ranging from cheetah to Rhino. Many of the roads are tarred and in good condition. Birdhides, toilets and braai facilities are available along these roads.

Night drives cater for groups of 10-12 or 18-20 people. Firewood and blankets are supplied and game is tracked from open game viewing vehicles. Visitors must supply thier own food for a braai at the Fish Eagle Lapa.

Game viewing bus tours lasting two hours may be booked in advance. Visitors must provide thier own vehicle while a qualified guide accompanies the group.

Hiking


Rietvlei Nature Reserve offers a 10km (4 hour) day walk (10-15 people) and a 21km (2 day) overnight hike (6-8 people). Starting Friday afternoon and ending Sunday afternoon.

Facilities include two overnight huts with beds, mattresses, hot/cold water, limited cooking utensils and firewood. The route has a number of historical structures such as British embankments used during the occupation of Pretoria.

Bird Watching


The Reserve is made up of a number of different habitats which make for some exiting bird watching. Grassland habitats make up the bulk of the habitats. The two dams on the reserve (with bird hides) provide open water and wetland habitats.
